Due to the nature of the air freight industry, where processes include the usage of a high amount of equipment and the potential to carry dangerous items, for example, it is important that businesses know how to keep their employees safe.

3 Essential Air Freight Safety Rules

There are a number of safety practices that they can implement in their business to ensure that they are able to keep their employees healthy and secure in their personal safety.

Rule #1: Instate a Comprehensive Training Programme

One of the air freight safety best practices is comprehensive training programs, as this allows employees to be aware of the risks of the air freight industry and will mean that they have a comprehensive and practical knowledge of how to use dangerous equipment and potentially toxic substances. Training programs should cover all of the aspects of the business which may potentially limit their employee’s safety. These training courses should be enforced when each individual is first employed at the company, although employees must have refresher training programs on a regular basis to maintain their safety.

Rule #2: Carry Dangerous Goods Safely

Airfreight services, such as those we offer here at New Horizons Freight, should also make sure that they have regulations in place to carry dangerous or toxic goods in their air freight services. These rules should be circulated to employees whenever they are updated. They should ensure that every employee knows how to store and transport dangerous goods effectively, as well as how they can keep in line with national and global guidelines in the air freight industry.

Rule #3: Complete Regular Safety Assessments

In the air freight industry, there are many incidents of musculoskeletal diseases through excessive manual handling (which can be solved through the introduction of equipment) and slips and falls from the workplace (which can be fixed through choosing the appropriate floor surface and having a good cleaning campaign).

Businesses must ensure that they do all that they can to limit these. This includes completing regular health and safety inspections and assessments around the workplace, especially when transporting dangerous goods that have extra guidelines that employees need to follow. Any issues should be instantly highlighted and reported so that they can be immediately remedied in line with the company’s policy.
