A series of significant road upgrades around the Port of Durban is set to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion that has hampered the area for more than a decade. The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has announced that it is progressing steadily with its comprehensive road rehabilitation project aimed at enhancing access to the port’s facilities.
The 24-month project, which began in September 2023, is part of Transnet’s broader recovery plan and aligns with its commitment to providing port infrastructure that ensures operational efficiency. The initiative is critical for reducing delays caused by the deteriorating road infrastructure within the port's boundaries.
So far, 58% of the construction work has been completed, including improvements to roads in key areas such as Maydon Wharf and Bayhead precincts. Notable upgrades have been made to Toulon Road, the Bayhead Road and South Coast Road intersection, Davey Road, Parker Road, McBride Road, Fletcher Road, and Wisely Road.
Significant refurbishments have also been undertaken on Maydon Road and Johnstone Road. These enhancements include stormwater pipe jetting, cleaning of kerbs and channels, and the milling and paving of existing asphalt surfaces.
The TNPA expects these upgrades to significantly improve road safety, traffic flow, and overall operational efficiency in the Maydon Wharf, Container, Bayhead, and Island View precincts. These improvements are crucial for the port, which is a vital hub for freight movement in South Africa and the region.
Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi, TNPA’s acting Port Manager for the Port of Durban, emphasized the importance of timely completion of the project, stating, “The project team is working diligently to ensure that the project is completed on time, as we understand that delays could result in further traffic congestion at the port.”
Ben-Mazwi also urged drivers to remain vigilant and patient while navigating the affected roads, as the construction work is essential to easing the heavy traffic burden that has long plagued the port’s infrastructure.
